Things that go bump in the night…
Strange shapes lurking in the shadows..
Unusual noises coming from upstairs?
Is it all a Halloween nightmare? No, it’s a day in the life of a pest controller!
This time of year might be spooky and dark but you don’t have to let the little horrors into your houses. The Autumn season signifies lots of pest activity from rodents of all shapes and sizes, to creepy crawlies and other pests that regularly give our customers a bad case of the shivers!
But don’t worry!
There are things that you can do to keep the pests at bay and your home protected from unwanted visitors at this time of year.
Don’t leave those pumpkins outside!
Firstly, with Halloween just around the corner many people enjoy putting pumpkins outside their door. These can be great to look at, but after the evening of trick or treaters has passed the pumpkins can become neglected and begin to rot.
These are a great food source for rats and mice which will attract them to your property. When rodents find a reliable source of food they will continue to return – you can’t blame them! The longer they are around a property, the more likely they are to find a way indoors. So think about clearing those pumpkins away as soon as Halloween is over.
The same applies to any other rubbish that may be lying around, removing the temptation for rats to come and feast outside your home.
Also, even at this time of the year flies can be a problem pest when there is rotting food around so this is another reason not to let those pumpkins sit for too long. Fruit flies are a pest that can be easily dealt with, but our customers agree, they would rather not have them in the first place!
Cockroach heaven
Sticky sweets, and sugary residue around the home or the kitchen worktop areas is something cockroaches just cannot resist!
Problems with this pest can easily happen if they are exposed to the remains of chocolate, sweets and other Halloween treats or food left out overnight. Cockroaches can breed quickly and can overtake a kitchen area in very little time, so keeping the area clean and tidy will naturally prevent appearances from this pest.
Bats and birds
A true symbol of Halloween are bats! Finding bats in a residence is actually quite common. Once bats are inside your property there is nothing we can do as pest controllers to remove them, as they are a protected species and if we do find evidence of them we are unable to work on the property. Therefore our advice is always to speak to the bat conservation trust if you believe you have signs of bats.
Chimneys are also great access points for pests including pigeons. Look at getting chimneys capped to prevent entry, your local pest control professional can do this for you if wish.
Following a few of these handy tips should help you have a hassle free Halloween, however if you are unlucky enough to still find yourself in a situation where you feel you have an out-of-control pest issue concerning any of the pests mentioned above, then you can trust that DALPEST Pest Solutions are here to help you.
