This weekend was a busy one for Peterborough residents as the local Volunteer Fire Brigade hosted a family fun open day on Sunday 28th July.
Based in the centre of Peterborough and founded in 1884 the crew of the volunteer brigade are not only unique to the city but also the UK. As their name suggests, the men and women who are stationed there are volunteers and don’t get paid for their service.
They organise and run an annual event designed to help raise money for the volunteers who dedicate so much of their time and energy into the cause, and to provide local businesses the chance to promote themselves. There were a number of stalls to look around, food on sale (ice cream was needed as it was a hot day!) and of course lots of demonstrations from a range of fire engines both old and new to entertain the children.
It’s good to give back
When you operate as a small business it is important to understand how crucial the local community are to your business’ survival.
Giving back to the communities that support you is key and so this event provided the perfect opportunity for two members of the wider DALROD business family to join in and help raise some money.
Both HD Teamwear and DALPEST Pest Solutions had stalls at the event, with staff members from across the businesses giving up their Sundays to help out. All proceeds raised were shared between the volunteer brigade and the business.
This was not the first time HD Teamwear have featured at this event. The team are already responsible for creating the great range of merchandise and clothing for the volunteers throughout the year, but they brought an extra special treat to the event this year for members of the public.
Print your own t-shirts was on offer for families visiting with customised designs available for the children to get creative with. They were a big hit with everyone! Who doesn’t love a fire engine t-shirt? Plus there was volunteer fire brigade merchandise available to purchase as well.
It was a great chance to show the flexibility of the local printing and embroidery business who offer a wide range of products for personal clothing designs as well as corporate branded clothing.
Andrew Dean from HD Teamwear commented on the success of the event, “it was great to see so many people supporting this event, the turnout was really strong and we were so happy to be able to show our products to everyone in such a practical and hands-on way. The crew do such an amazing job responding to emergencies around the city and we are proud to support them.”
DALPEST Pest Solutions were also showcasing their services for the first time. This included this year’s first batch of local honey! The story behind the honey is unique as the team are responsible for collecting honey bee swarms and rehoming them at the DALPEST offices in hives managed by the team, and the honey is the final result of all that hard work from the team and the bees!
They were also making pest control entertaining with a popular splat the rat game and the chance for the children to make their very own beeswax candles to take home and keep (and light responsibly with an adult present!). Raising awareness about the importance of pest control and educating people in a fun way about the work involved helps to spread a positive message.
“This was the first time we have attended this event and we were thrilled to see how well it was attended by the local community,” said Richard Day from DALPEST Pest Solutions. “As a local business we want to engage with as many people as possible so they are aware of our services, but we want to do this in a creative way that means the children able to have fun. The volunteers do such an important job, we were pleased to be able to support them in the work they do”.
Everyone had a fantastic day, although the work never stops for the volunteer fire fighters who had two live call outs to attend throughout the event, but this added to the excitement of the day for all concerned.
